In a bid to solve the challenge of deforestation in Nigeria, the Rural Environmental Empowerment Initiative (T.R.E.E) Initiative in conjunction with the Growing Green Initiative (GGI) in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo state, has embarked on the planting of a million trees project in the institution.
Co-founder of T.R.E.E Initiative, Mr. Sola Kolawole, disclosed this during the tree planting event held at LAUTECH tagged: “One Student One Tree Project’’.
Thousands of seedlings were planted by students volunteers and the university management staff to begin the project.
Kolawole who said that the basics of the massive planting of trees for carbon sequestration was to alleviate the effect of climate change in Nigeria, commended the LAUTECH management for accepting the project beyond the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences.
The environmentalist, however, urged the institution to seek the wealth creation component of the project through GGI, noting that the project, if properly managed would address some annual funding challenges of the university.
